“Morning, sunshine,” Tom croaked, his voice rough as sandpaper. He sat slumped against a tree, looking like death warmed over. “You look about as good as I feel.”

Claire managed a weak chuckle. “What happened last night? Everything’s a blur after Sarah’s... was that singing?”

Tom winced at the memory. “I think so. Though ‘caterwauling’ might be a more accurate description.”

Nearby, Paulette was attempting to piece together the events of the previous night. “Did I... did I try to dance?” she asked, her face a mixture of confusion and horror.

Adam nodded, then immediately regretted the motion. “Oh yeah. It was quite the performance. You even gave us an encore when you fell into my lap.”

Paulette buried her face in her hands, groaning. “Oh god. I’m never drinking again.”

Despite the collective misery, there was an undercurrent of good humor in the camp. People exchanged sheepish grins and playful jabs as they recounted snippets of the night’s escapades.

As the morning wore on, a steady stream of residents made their way to Jack’s shelter. Some came bearing gifts - extra rations, handmade trinkets, promises of future favors - all in hopes of securing a spot on the list for the next batch of moonshine.

Jack, looking surprisingly chipper, greeted each visitor with a knowing smirk. “Seems like my little concoction was a hit,” he drawled, clearly enjoying his newfound popularity.

Maria watched the proceedings with a mixture of amusement and concern. She couldn’t deny the positive impact the gathering had on the group’s morale. The air of camaraderie was palpable, a stark contrast to the tension that had been building in recent weeks.

As she helped distribute water and herbal remedies for the hangovers, Maria reflected on the delicate balance they needed to maintain. These moments of joy were crucial for their survival, a reminder of what they were fighting for. But they couldn’t lose sight of the harsh reality of their situation.
